GTA 6 – it’s going to be big (Rockstar Games)

A reader makes some predictions about the launch of GTA 6 next year and how it could help or hinder other games and companies.

Maybe I haven’t been paying enough attention, but I was absolutely shocked to read that GTA 5 has now sold over 200 million. Last time I looked it was vaguely around 100 million, which is crazy enough, but to be over 100 million ahead of anything even vaguely comparable (PUBG and Mario Kart 8 at 70+ million) is just crazy. It’s like the avatar of the video game industry, but dominates even harder.

Obviously that’s more than three generations, but there’s no way to downplay the game’s performance. It’s incredible and the only thing that will stop it is GTA 6. I doubt that will stop it though, it’s not like sales are suddenly going to drop. to zero, especially considering the game is next-gen only.

Things are getting a little tough in gaming right now with all the job losses and Xbox and PlayStation seeming to have no idea about it, but right now I don’t think it’s in their control. They don’t have the games that could impact console sales or anything else right now or in the near future, but Rockstar does. When GTA 6 comes out next year, everything is going to change.

I don’t need to tell you that GTA 6 is the most anticipated game of all time. GTA 5 has been sold for over 10 years now and 200 million people are an incredible number of fans sitting there waiting for a new game to come out. Imagine if only 10% of GTA 5 players bought the game in the first week, that would be 20 million in a few days. Most games feel good if they make a few million in their lifetime.

The release of GTA 6 will be like nothing the world has ever seen. That sounds crazy, but consider: games already sell more than music and cinema and those are just regular hits like Halo or Mario. The most anticipated sequel in the best-selling franchise ever will be a meteor to hit pop culture; Marvel and Star Wars will look like obscure cult hits.

It will also do wonders for sales of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. If I were Sony, I would have saved all my money to make a deal with Rockstar for exclusive content and/or a console bundle, perhaps with the original version and the PS5 Pro. That would sell like hot cakes, because so many people are going to buy a next-gen console just for GTA 6.

It’s going to be ironic because Microsoft wasted all that money on Activision Blizzard, but they probably would have done a lot better to make a deal with GTA 6. Somehow, though, I don’t think anyone wants to see Phil Spencer anymore will give a few billion. do that. And yet for Sony that is something they can afford.

However, there is a downside to all this and that is what will happen to all other games released at the same time or, for example, in the same decade. Now that we know GTA 6 is coming out in the fall, Nintendo better hope they release the Switch 2 in the spring as rumored. They have the least concerns about crossovers, but even then people will spend time and money on GTA 6 and not Nintendo games.

But for everyone else, you can just forget about it. Especially with casual gamers who are going to spend money on a new Assassin’s Creed or Monster Hunter or whatever other normally big franchise comes out next year? They’re just minnows compared to GTA 6 and they and everything else will be absolutely crushed.

Not only that, but thanks to GTA Online 2, or whatever they call it, the GTA mania will never end. It will keep selling forever, and people will keep playing it forever. Not only will it overshadow all normal games, it will also put a huge dent in things like Fortnite and Apex Legends. Ultimately, it’s not even a matter of saving or destroying the industry, because for at least the first year, GTA 6 will do that. are the games industry.
