The rumors of a new remake of the first Resident Evil are not as definitive as they seemed, despite 2026 being the 30th anniversary.

There have been whispers of a new Resident Evil 1 remake for a while now, and with 2026 being the 30th anniversary of the entire franchise, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all if Capcom was planning a second iteration of the classic at the time. PlayStation 1 game.

That also means it’s very easy to make stuff up and pass it off as a rumor. And so it is that different sources seem to disagree on whether a new Resident Evil 1 remake is on the way or not.

However, if this happens, the latest rumor claims that the new remake will not feature pre-rendered backgrounds, but will feature the crimson main zombies, from the original 2002 remake on the GameCube.

According to Biohazard Declassified, the new version of the original survival horror will be slower than the Resident Evil 2 remake, with zombies taking more damage and each having their own unique design.

The remake will still have a third-person perspective, but is described as ‘different’ and slower than those for the more action-oriented games.

There’s also going to be an expansion of the Resident Evil 1 story, although it’s not clear what this might mean โ€“ perhaps some new details to tie it into the later games or to take into account the fact that there probably won’t be a Resident Evil will be No remake.

Previously, movie rumor monger DanielRPK had also suggested that the remake would be released in 2026 and at first it seemed as if AestheticGamer aka Dusk Golem also agreed.

Dusk Golem is the most respected Resident Evil leaker, but it appears a screenshot that made the rounds on Sunday that appeared to show him confirming the rumors was fake.

The above tweet seems to make it clear that he doesn’t think a new remake is coming, although there’s always the possibility that he just doesn’t know about it yet.

It always seemed inevitable that Capcom would come up with a new remake of the original Resident Evil, because while the first one is well regarded, it is now very old and uses static, pre-rendered backgrounds like the PS1 game.

That means there’s plenty of reason for another remake, the only question was when to do it. Some had theorized that Capcom was waiting for all the remakes to be completed and perhaps we have indeed reached that point, as it’s not clear what else would be made next.

The 30th anniversary is of course also a good excuse, but others had imagined waiting for the next generation or trying to make the new remake first person, to further differentiate it.

Capcom will be at Summer Game Fest, but if the remake doesn’t release until 2026, it’s more likely we’ll hear about Resident Evil 9 first, regardless of whether these latest rumors are true or not.
